Project Overview

This project involved coating the concrete floor of a food processing facility in Bakersfield, California. The total floor space was approximately 3,500 square feet and included two large freezer rooms—one of which measured around 1,500 square feet. Due to the nature of the facility, the client required a highly durable, sanitary, and slip-resistant surface that could withstand moisture, heavy traffic, and thermal cycling.

Surface Preparation

As with all Husky Coatings projects, we began with thorough surface preparation. Our team used industrial-grade diamond grinders to mechanically profile the entire concrete slab, ensuring strong adhesion of all coatings. This is a critical first step to remove contaminants and open up the concrete surface.

Joint Fill

Before any coatings were applied, we filled all floor joints using a polyurea joint filler. This flexible filler allows for movement and flexing within the slab, reducing the risk of future cracking. It also seals the joints to eliminate bacteria-trapping crevices, which is especially important for facilities handling food production.

MVB, Epoxy, and Urethane Coating System

After the joints were filled, we applied a clear moisture vapor barrier (MVB) epoxy primer to protect the concrete from moisture intrusion. This was followed by a pigmented epoxy build coat to establish strength and durability across the slab. In the freezer rooms, we broadcasted silica sand into the wet epoxy to enhance traction and ensure worker safety.

To finish the system, we applied a pigmented urethane topcoat infused with aluminum oxide. This final layer adds chemical resistance, durability, and anti-slip texture while locking everything in for long-lasting performance.

Project Outcome

The completed floor provides a seamless, non-porous, and easy-to-clean surface that complies with food safety regulations. The combination of a high-performance coating system and proactive joint treatment ensures long-term protection, durability, and safety for this commercial facility.
