From Dated Tile to Modern, Seamless Commercial Flooring
When new owners took over a Bakersfield juice bar, they knew the existing tile flooring didn’t match their vision. They wanted a fresh, modern aesthetic that aligned with their brand while meeting the practical demands of a high-traffic food service environment. The challenge? Create a floor that looked incredible while handling daily foot traffic, frequent spills, and stringent food safety requirements.
Husky Coatings delivered a complete flooring transformation using a graphite flake polyurea system that checked every box. Over two days, we converted 1,000 square feet of outdated tile into a sleek, seamless surface that’s as functional as it is eye-catching.
Understanding the Unique Demands of Food Service Flooring
Juice bars and similar food service businesses face flooring challenges that go beyond typical retail spaces. Between frequent liquid spills, constant foot traffic, health department regulations, and the need to maintain an inviting atmosphere, the floor has to work overtime.
The previous tile installation presented several problems. Grout lines trap moisture, bacteria, and debris—making thorough cleaning difficult and creating potential health code violations. Tile can crack or become uneven over time, creating trip hazards. And aesthetically, the dated tile simply didn’t reflect the fresh, modern brand identity the new owners wanted to establish.
This project required a coating system engineered specifically for commercial food service environments while delivering the visual impact the owners envisioned.
The Polyurea System: Built for Performance and Aesthetics
Why Polyurea for the Base Layer?
We started with a polyurea base coat, which offers distinct advantages for commercial applications. Polyurea provides excellent adhesion to concrete substrates and maintains flexibility even after curing. This flexibility is critical in commercial spaces where temperature fluctuations and minor substrate movement are inevitable. Unlike rigid epoxy systems that can crack under stress, polyurea moves with the substrate while maintaining its protective properties.
The rapid cure time of polyurea also minimized downtime for the business—essential when working with commercial clients who can’t afford extended closures.
Graphite Flake: Function Meets Design
Once the polyurea base was applied, we broadcast graphite-colored vinyl flakes throughout the coating. This wasn’t just an aesthetic choice—though the dark grey flakes perfectly complemented the juice bar’s modern branding and interior design.
Flake systems provide inherent texture that improves slip resistance even before the topcoat application. The multi-toned appearance of broadcast flakes also helps hide minor dirt and wear between cleanings, keeping the floor looking pristine in a high-traffic environment. And unlike solid-color floors, flake systems create visual depth and interest that elevates the entire space.
Polyaspartic and Urethane Topcoats: The Protective Shield
After the flakes were embedded, we applied a polyaspartic sealer coat followed by a urethane topcoat. This combination delivers the ultimate protection for commercial environments.
Polyaspartic coatings offer exceptional UV resistance and rapid cure times, while urethane topcoats provide superior abrasion resistance and chemical protection—critical attributes for any commercial flooring system. For this juice bar, the urethane layer protects against sugars, acids from fruit juices, and the constant cleaning solutions required in food service.
We infused the urethane topcoat with 320-grit aluminum oxide to enhance slip resistance. This creates a textured surface that provides reliable traction even when the floor is wet, addressing both safety concerns and regulatory requirements without compromising the smooth, easy-to-clean finish the owners wanted.
Creating a Seamless Surface: Why Joint Filling Matters
One of the most critical aspects of this installation was addressing the saw-cut control joints in the concrete substrate. In food service environments, the health department requires floors to be seamless—any cracks, joints, or gaps become harboring points for bacteria, food particles, and moisture that can’t be adequately cleaned.
We filled all control joints with a semi-rigid epoxy specifically formulated for this application. Unlike completely rigid fillers that crack when the concrete naturally expands and contracts, semi-rigid epoxy accommodates substrate movement while maintaining a sealed surface. This prevents the coating system from cracking along joint lines while ensuring the floor remains fully seamless and compliant with health regulations.
The result is a completely smooth surface with no crevices where contaminants can accumulate—exactly what food service operations need to maintain sanitary conditions and pass inspections.
Two-Day Transformation: Minimizing Business Disruption
Time is money in commercial operations, and extended floor installations can mean lost revenue. We completed this 1,000-square-foot juice bar transformation in just two days, thanks to the fast-curing properties of polyurea and polyaspartic materials.
Day one focused on surface preparation, joint filling, and application of the polyurea base with graphite flakes. Day two involved the polyaspartic and urethane topcoat applications. The rapid cure times meant the floor was ready for light foot traffic within 24 hours of completion, allowing the business to resume operations quickly.
The Results: Durability Meets Design
The finished floor delivers everything the juice bar owners needed. The graphite flake pattern creates a sophisticated, modern appearance that aligns perfectly with their branding. The seamless surface meets health department requirements while making daily cleaning simple and efficient. The slip-resistant finish protects staff and customers even during busy periods when spills are inevitable.
Most importantly, the polyurea system’s durability means this floor will maintain its appearance and performance through years of heavy commercial use. The owners now have a flooring investment that supports their business operations rather than creating maintenance headaches.
Key Considerations for Commercial Food Service Flooring
If you’re planning a flooring project for a restaurant, café, juice bar, or similar food service business, this project demonstrates several important principles. First, seamless surfaces aren’t just aesthetic preferences—they’re practical necessities that support sanitation and regulatory compliance. Second, the specific coating chemistry matters; polyurea and urethane systems offer performance characteristics that standard epoxy alone can’t match in demanding commercial environments. Third, proper joint treatment prevents premature failure and ensures long-term performance.
The difference between adequate commercial flooring and exceptional commercial flooring comes down to selecting the right system for your specific operational demands and aesthetic goals.
