Every so often a job comes along that shows exactly why we do things the way we do. This one was a pool deck and patio in Bakersfield’s 93309 area — about 1,600 square feet of backyard concrete that had seen its share of summers. The homeowner wanted the whole thing coated, but here’s the twist: she was leaving town for a week. She handed us the job, told us where she wanted her patio furniture moved, and trusted us to handle the rest.
That kind of trust isn’t something we take lightly. Here’s how the week went.
Step One: Clear the Deck
Before any coating touches concrete, the space has to be empty and clean. Our crew moved every piece of her patio furniture to the spot she’d asked for, then got the deck prepped and ready. With the homeowner away, we set up a simple routine: photos sent to her phone every single day showing exactly what was done. She was a thousand miles from her backyard and still knew more about the progress than most folks standing in theirs.
Moisture First: The Vapor Barrier
Pool decks are the one place where you can’t cut corners on moisture. Concrete next to a pool lives with water on top and water vapor pushing up from underneath, and that vapor is the silent killer of coatings. When moisture rising through a slab has nowhere to go, it can build enough pressure to break the bond and delaminate whatever’s on top. So the first product down on this job was a moisture vapor barrier — a dedicated layer whose only job is to stop that vapor from ever reaching the decorative coating above it.
It’s a step you’ll never see in the finished photos. It’s also the step that decides whether the finish lasts.
A Pool Deck Coating Built for the Bakersfield Sun
With the slab sealed off, we built the system up in layers: a polyaspartic base coat, a full broadcast of our California Grey flakes (you can see it and the rest of our colors on our color chart), a polyaspartic top coat to lock the flakes in, and a urethane top coat over everything for extra wear resistance.
Why polyaspartic outdoors? Bakersfield sun is brutal on coatings. Standard epoxy yellows and chalks out in UV. Polyaspartics are UV-stable, so they won’t yellow or degrade in outdoor applications, which is exactly what you want on a west-facing pool deck in Kern County. The California Grey flake keeps the surface cooler-looking and hides the dust and water spots that come with pool life.
This is the same system thinking we bring to every pool deck coating and patio floor coating we install — the layers change with the surface, but the logic doesn’t.
The Homecoming
Before she got back, we brought in a professional pool cleaner to get the water sparkling, then our crew returned and moved every piece of furniture back into place. She left town with a tired slab of concrete and came home to a finished backyard — new deck, clean pool, furniture right where it belonged. Nothing to do but enjoy it.
